I’m so sad, my heart is with Manchester and all those affected. There is more good than bad in our big, scary, beautiful world, that’s important to remember in difficult times like this. There were hotels taking in children who couldn’t find their parents and taxi drivers giving free rides. There is always someone helping. The doctors and nurses and law enforcement’s that have been tirelessly working. There is a light that never goes out. ✨✨✨

When I got them, I kinda thought it was just something that everyone gets once they hit a certain age, and it was just so normal that no one spoke about it. Everyone can turn into animals, right? But then I started hearing the word ‘metahuman’. And I realised I was more like them, not like everyone else. This wasn’t something that mom could do and just never spoke about it. This was out of the ordinary.

I swear, she gets out of my sight so quickly. I don’t even realise she’s left my side most of the time, and then I turn around and she’s petting a dog, or beating up some guy. But this time, she’s just peering through the door of the auditorium, the muffled sounds of some 80’s song just about making it out into the hallway. I saunter over to where she is, her face grinning so wide it’s cracking the lipstick on her face.
Inside, of course, is the glee club. I’ve gotta admit, coming to look at them is quite entertaining. They’re sometimes in crazy outfits, or doing dance routines that are way beyond their abilities. The best times are when they’re trying to rap. As I peer through the small window, I can’t help snigger – they’re doing something that looks like an overly jazzy catwalk. But then, we both gasp, seeing a familiar face strut to the front of the stage.

12 Days of Crossmas - Day 6 - Bellatrix Lestrange in Arkham Asylum

(Illustration credit: Bethany Grace)Arkham Asylum was home to people in beyond imaginable situations. Many of the patients considered themselves to be magical, lost without their wand to aid them. And some of them would also quake in fear, warning the doctors that he who must not be named was coming for them, coming for all of them. And then, there were the others who warned them the same thing with a glint of excitement in their eyes.
Bellatrix Lestrange was perhaps the most exaggerated example of this. With wild, ragged brown hair and wilder eyes, her appearance was only the beginning of her untameable nature. Workers at the asylum would yell at her, spit at her, even abuse her, but she would laugh the whole way through with a bone shattering cackle. They would never ask her about her precious you-know-who, though. At least, never like they believed her. Doctors normally treated her as if she was crazy, as though someone had started a rumour to make the patients paranoid and tried to work out where the idea of him came on. But these doctors were ones she’d never seen before. And they certainly thought he was more than an idea.

She felt the joy warm her spirit, spreading all through her body until it reached the very tips of her fingers where she was clutching her wand, waiting to say the words. She’d been working on this spell for months, and now, she was sure she was finally ready to cast it. The spell that was not only beautiful and protective, but would reveal a witch or wizard’s inner being. She smiled, confident she had reached the peak of her joy, and drew a deep breath.
“Expecto Patronum!”
She opened her eyes. The room around her was full of magic dummies and tools, and one very unimpressed friend. Malia’s eyes narrowed, her arms already crossed over her chest.
